Final decision on $15 billion VW settlement coming Oct 25

The Detroit News: Judge ‘inclined’ to OK $14.7B VW emission settlement U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer, after hearing comments from aggrieved customers, said the "court is strongly inclined to approve the settlement" of $15 billion to VW TDI owners. The settlement includes some $10 billion to nearly one half million U.S. VW diesel owners whose cars were equipped with devices to register false emissions testing data while actually far exceeding federal emissions standards. The settlement also includes $2.7 billion to remediate the environmental impact of VW's so-called "clean diesel" engines and $2 billion to research zero-emissions vehicles. Is $5000 enough to buy off VW owners?

The Atlantic: Volkswagen's $10 Billion Settlement   Ahead of the official court announcement, an anonymous source reports that VW TDI owners will each receive approximately $5,000 in compensation plus either the option to sell their vehicles back at pre-scandal market prices or get them fixed (if the EPA approves the fix). Volkswagen illegal emissions will kill and harm people.

Contrary to claims by Kenneth Feinberg, settlement administrator for the VW diesel emissions fraud, scientific evidence says people will die from VW’s illegal emissions. Kenneth Feinberg, settlement administrator hired by Volkswagen to compensate owners harmed in the company’s diesel emissions scandal, is saying the settlement process should be less emotional than other cases because there have been no casualties. Interviewed by NPR’s Renee Montagne on Jan 20, Feinberg remarked, “unlike GM or 9/11 or even the BP oil rig explosion, we do not have a situation here involving death. NY Times: VW, Reeling From Emissions Scandal, to Delay Earnings Report Volkswagen announced that it would delay releasing annual earnings and its annual meeting. It can't determine how much the scandal will cost the company. Law 360: VW Says It Cheated "Impossible" US Emission Standards An internal investigation by the prominent law firm Jones Day led to a VW management admission that since it couldn't meet US emission standards, it would cheat its way around them.  Volkswagen said the strategy was the work of dishonest employees and managers who looked the other way.
