The Detroit News: Judge ‘inclined’ to OK $14.7B VW emission settlement
U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer, after hearing comments from aggrieved customers, said the "court is strongly inclined to approve the settlement" of $15 billion to VW TDI owners. The settlement includes some $10 billion to nearly one half million U.S. VW diesel owners whose cars were equipped with devices to register false emissions testing data while actually far exceeding federal emissions standards.
The settlement also includes $2.7 billion to remediate the environmental impact of VW's so-called "clean diesel" engines and $2 billion to research zero-emissions vehicles.
Despite the record-setting figure, VW said the settlement is not an admission of guilt.
